Is Alpaca Wool Really Hypoallergenic?
Alpaca wool is considered one of the most comfortable natural materials for good reason. It is incredibly soft, lightweight, and pleasant against the skin, and it also has a quality that makes it especially interesting for people with sensitive skin.
Unlike sheep’s wool, alpaca wool contains very little lanolin — a natural fat that can sometimes cause irritation or allergic reactions. This is why alpaca products are often well tolerated even by sensitive skin. In addition, alpaca fibers are smoother and less scratchy, so they do not create an unpleasant sensation when they come into contact with the skin.
But can it be called 100% hypoallergenic? Not quite. No natural material can guarantee that every person will have no allergic reaction. Reactions may be caused not only by the fibers themselves, but also by dyes, processing agents, or other components of the product.
However, the combination of softness, lightness, low lanolin content, and natural properties makes alpaca wool particularly valuable. It is not simply a warm material — it is a natural fiber used to create comfortable, pleasant, and durable products.
So, alpaca wool should not be described as completely hypoallergenic, but it can indeed be considered one of the gentlest types of natural wool.
